Creating Daily Goals Based on Your Long Term Goal

First, I apologize for not posting last week. I had one priority that absolutely had to be finished by last Friday so some other things on my schedule had to get bumped. One of those things was my blog post. But I’m back this week and have a great post for you about a goal-setting secret I learned that really helped me reach more goals.

Here we go:
My goals used to be more of a “to do” list where all my goals were listed randomly. For example: write a book, drink 60 oz of water a day, go to the post office, build a following on social media, etc. I kept failing at reaching my goals. (I think some of you can already see why.) Then I figured out the secret. Some of the goals I was setting were short term goals and some were long term. Writing a book is definitely a long term goal, but my brain was seeing it as something that had to be completed as easily as going to the post office. I needed to organize my goals to show my brain that some of these goals needed a lot more work than others.

I started dividing my “to do” items into categories: Writing, Life (for all those little errands, time with friends, date night), Cleaning Day (for laundry and, obviously, cleaning), Finances. Some of these categories don’t really have long term goals, but the ones that did, I chose which long term goal I was going to focus on first. To keep this post simple, I’m going to show you how I created short term goals for just one long term goal in the category of writing.

Writing Category
Long term goal: Write and publish a book

1. I research.
If I know nothing about my long term goal, I research it. I form a rough idea of what reaching the goal is going to include or what kind of steps are involved. I start with only the basic information because, if you like details like I do, it is very easy to get overwhelmed and feel like quitting before I even get started.

For the writing example, I had a list that looked something like this:
Write the book
Write
Edit
Rewrite
Publish the book
Format for self publishing
Upload to self publishing platforms
Market the book
Choose main social media to connect with fans
Create a marketing and sales plan

(This list changed a lot, by the way, as I learned more about each area during my ongoing research.)

2. I write out one or two of my first steps.
Next, I started writing down only the first few steps toward my long term goal, no more than would take a month to complete. (Note: Your first two steps will be different than mine. My mind was hung up on different things than yours might be.) For me, the first few steps to getting started on writing my book were something like this:
Research writing processes
Figure out a writing process that works for me
Record ideas for the novel I want to write

3. I break down my monthly goals into weekly goals.
I took my monthly list and asked myself, “What do I need to do to complete my goals for this month?” Then I wrote a list of ideas and steps required for each goal. Based on that list, I would gauge how much time I needed to devote to each to have them done by the end of the month. (Keep in mind, this is just what works for me. You can figure out the steps that work best for you and your specific goals.)

For the list above, my weekly goals would look something like this:
Research writing processes - 1 week
1. Create profile on one writing platform; make at least one writing friend to discuss writing processes with
2. Google “How to write a book”
3. Check out YouTube videos on how to write a book
4. Research J.K. Rowling and Amanda Hocking for inspiration on their writing processes

Figure out a writing process that works for me - 1 month
1. Write out an ideal schedule for my writing day then use it. Write what works and doesn’t work with the schedule and adjust it for the following day until I find the schedule that best works for me.
2. Make a list of ideas of what inspires me and puts me in the mood to write, then test out those ideas and mark the ones that work.
3. Find a location where writing comes easiest to me. Make a list of places that I think will work for me, then test them out.

Record any ideas I get for the novel I’m working on - 1 month
1. Use a 1-subject notebook to record any plot ideas, names, characters, locations, etc.
2. Set aside specific time each day to brainstorm for the novel
3. As my information grows, figure out a system to organize that information so I can find it and add to it easily.

(From here I chose what I would work on each day. Looking at this list felt a whole lot better and manageable than my original jumbled "to do" list.)

The above is just an example, but the concept is there of how I would break my long term goal down into monthly, weekly and daily goals. The specific goals I set changed a lot, and I let that be ok. I had never written an entire book before, so I didn’t know the daily steps involved. I had to figure them out as I went. I also didn’t know what kind of setbacks I would run into, so I let that be ok as well. Sometimes I would change a goal to better suit me, other times I would completely get rid of a goal. I felt it out each day and wrote down what was working for me and what wasn’t. By adjusting the things that weren’t working, I found the best process possible for myself. I can now accomplish goals much more easily because I’m setting specific goals that I know will work for me. I still adjust goals that aren’t working. It’s all about learning yourself and what works best for your personality and the way your brain is wired.

Best wishes to turning your long term goal into short term goals and getting those goals accomplished! I’m rooting for you! Take whatever helped you in this post and test it out, adjust it and find what works for you. It’s all about you, the way you learn and the way you function.

Thanks for stopping in again this week. Next week is February, so we will be starting a new subject I like to call The Imaginary You. I’ll be sharing my journey of how I used my imagination to find and become the person I always wanted to be: the real me.

Each of us is special. Each of us has been given a gift that fulfills us, gives us confidence and provides a unique way for us to connect with and add value to the world. Each of us has a Real Me inside, waiting to shine.

See you next week for more about finding this wonderful you. Plus, I’ll have an exciting announcement to post that you won’t want to miss, so I’ll see you right back here next Thursday!

Why I Changed Everything About the Way I Set Goals

Hey, everyone. It's a new year and time to brush off those resolutions that have been gathering dust since last January.

This year I have made a commitment to quit making resolutions and start setting goals that work for me. I'll show you three things that worked for me in goal-setting. But, hey, these three things may not work the same way for you as they did for me. So I encourage you to figure out your own personalized list for the area in your life that you want to improve this year.

1. Find what works for me
This was an actual goal I set several months ago. I realized I was constantly looking at the examples of others, trying to copy them, then ending up disappointed when their methods didn't work for me. I started asking myself questions like If I could create my writing day in any way I wanted, how would I do it? My answer included things like 1) Have coffee as soon as I wake up. 2) Stay in my robe and PJ's until I actually felt like showering. 3) Put off all my errands till the end of the day so I could give the best part of my mind to my writing in the morning.

Immediately there were protests from the peanut gallery in my brain. "But what will people think of you?!" "You know only lazy people wear their robe and don't shower till after lunch." But it was like I had discovered a magical strength in my body. Was I going to let these critical voices keep me from pursuing my dream of a writing career? NO! So I kept my robe on! I drank coffee and gazed dreamily out the window when I got up in the morning! And no matter how much those pesky errands tried to pressure me into getting them done, I ignored them until I chose to tend to them.

Stand up for how you need to order your day or organize your space so that you can create. Find what works for you.

2. Write what works and doesn't work for me
Each day I wrote down ways I felt I was either successful or had failed in the goals I had set for that day and in how I managed my time. (I have the tendency to feel like a failure even when I achieve a difficult task. Not at all a helpful quality.) After writing out my list, I could see clear ways in which I had succeeded. In fact, the list of things I was happy with was longer than the list of my failures, so I declared that, overall, my day had been a success.

When I had a day where the list of failures was longer, I assured myself that was not a problem because I was in the process of learning...which leads me to my last point.

3. For the things that don't work, write a list of ideas on how to change these areas or goals so they will work for me
So every time I "failed" I wrote down what I could do next time that would work better for me. For example, I kept setting more goals per day than I had time to accomplish. So one change I made was to be more honest about how long each goal would take to complete. By making this change, I had a realistic list of goals that I could accomplish instead of overloading myself and setting myself up for failure. Even though, logically, I know not to set more goals than one can accomplish during a set time, but I wasn't realizing that was what was holding me back until I took the time to write down my successes and failures.

So this is why I changed how I set goals: I wasn't reaching my goals because something wasn't working for me. So I took the time to figure out what does work for me. I still write what is working and not working for me when I get stuck on a particular goal I can't seem to reach.

Now go out there and write your own ideas of what might work for you. Choose an area you want to improve, whether it's writing or something more personal like making more friends this year or that notorious "lose weight this year" resolution. But this year, you're actually gonna do it, 'cause you're going to figure out which methods work best for you so you can accomplish those meaningful goals.

Be sure to come back. We'll be talking about goals and goal setting all January long to keep you excited and inspired.

Leave a comment about the one goal you want to tackle this year--for good. You can do this! You're going to set your goals this year, and reach them!

Next week: "I Quit Making Resolutions and Started Making Life Changes"

Good News and Bad News

One week ago I wrote a blog post that you’ll never get to read because it is eternally frozen on my phone’s Blogger app.  I can’t even click on it to read what I wrote so that I can retype it on my PC.  It was brilliant, of course, something about having finished my newspaper articles (that I write every three weeks for a local paper) and being free to work on my edit for Innocence.  But only my obstinate Blogger app will ever know now what exactly it was.

That’s not even the bad news.  That was only to let you know the great loss I suffered exactly a week ago, to the day.

Good News
Now, here is the good news.  The first chapter of Innocence (updated and in your face) is prepped and ready to upload on Friday, the big NEW LAUNCH of this first book of the Gold Dragon series.

Bad News
The bad news is that the updated version of the entire book will not be available for sale this Friday.  (Awwwwww!)  I know.  I hear you.  There is nobody to blame but me.  I am doing my utmost to get it ready for week 2 (September 11, 2015 MARK YO’ CALENDA’S)...now that I think of it, I could try blaming my friend-editor who is being THE BOMBE...THE BOMB (with an e or without an e?) and editing my chapters for me.  But if I did that, she might bail at my lack of appreciation, then you wouldn’t get to see ANY of the update or book 2 or book 3 or book 4...you know what I mean?

What Does This Mean for You?
Well, if you are a patient person, all that means nothing because you’re planning on reading the free version of Innocence that I’m uploading to Wattpad each week.  If you are An Impatient One, you will have to suffer until week 2 when the book is (hopefully! *hand to mouth with raised eyebrows*) available for purchase.  Barring a third World War, an early winter cold or an obsessive desire to do nothing but drink coffee and read every day, I will have it ready by then.

What You’ve Been Waiting For--Pricing!
For The Impatient Ones who must know IMMEDIATELY what happens at the end of Innocence, you can download the book for ONLY $2.99 as an Amazon Kindle ebook or an iBook.

For the Caver who can only hold out until Chapter 3 is released before the suspense kills you, you can download the book for only $.99 on Etsy!  (I know!  This is a much better deal, but if you’ve gotta have it right away, then there’s a price to pay!)

For those who are Stronger Than Rocks and can withstand the suspense, the entire book will be released on Wattpad for free, one chapter per week.

Innocence, along with book 2, Awakened, and the others to follow are, on average, 10 chapters long.  They’re made to be read quickly (in one sitting for you speedy readers out there) and to hopefully appeal to people who dislike reading long books.  In these short but captivating episodes, you get the story in manageable bursts of action, emotion and suspense (with a sprinkle of romance and appropriate downtime to balance it all out, of course).

Now, a word about the pricing:  The $.99 version of the book, available after the release of Chapter 3, will only be available as a PDF download via Etsy.com (I will give you more info on that website when the download is available).  This download is awesomely formatted (I know, bad adverb there...just ignore it) and reads beautifully on phones or tablets.  The font has been sized to read well on smaller screens so you wouldn’t want to read this on your PC.  Who does that anyways??  The file will download to a PC, though, if you really want to read it that way.  The might just look kinda big.

The website I publish the ebook version with will not allow me to price a book at $.99, so just consider yourself lucky that I found a way to do that for you!

I think that’s everything for now.  If you have any questions, leave them in the comments or email me at authorrebeccayoder@gmail.com

Remember to subscribe to my blog via email in the right hand panel to get each blog update to your inbox.  Come on over to Wattpad, create your free account and follow me there so you can know the second Innocence: Chapter 1 is uploaded this Friday!  For Tablo users, you can find and follow me here.  I will be posting the chapters for free there as well.

My Current Reading Selections

I have several library books that I've been renewing and re-checking out since June. So I decided it's time to finish them before they're due.

1st is Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Second, Nicholas Nickleby by Charles Dickens

And third, Dickens A Biography by Fred Kaplan

I have to read about 9 chapters a day to get each of these done by their due date. Do you think I can do it? I'm already behind, so probably not. But what's more fun than giving yourself unrealistic goals and failing to reach them??

Gonna cut this post short cause I'm heading to Raleigh--a real treat after "dinky" Clinton, as the boyfriend calls it. I'm gonna get some Starbucks and feel like a REAL person for a day!!

See ya!

If you like this post, follow my blog or subscribe by email in the right hand panel to get these goodies directly to your inbox. Also follow me on Wattpad and Tablo where you can read my stories for free!

The relaunch of Innocence: book 1 of the Gold Dragon series is only 2 weeks away on Wattpad! You won't want to miss the chapter by chapter re-reveal. Get your Wattpad profile set up now and follow me so you'll know the second each chapter is available.

Buy! :)

Quick update

Just a quick post tonight to update on Book 2 Awakened. I hit Chapter 7 today so it won't be long till she's finished. Also my boyfriend was working on the cover today and it's looking really, really good.

I know I've already passed my personal deadline for the release of the second book, and even though it's easier to go silent and quietly slip off the grid and quit writing, I'm choosing to finish the book, late or not. I already have a small group of fans waiting for it and I can't let them down. I'm still working on the print version for the first book, trying to decide if I want to have it printed locally or go with something like Create Space. But, believe me, you'll know when I finally decide. :)

As always, remember to get your copy of Book 1 Innocence at:

Etsy for only $1.99 (what a deal!!)
Amazon for $2.99
IBooks for $2.99

Thanks for reading!

Short and Sweet and a Bit of Innocence

No I'm not talking about 5' me (although the title would be an accurate description lol). I'm going to keep this post simple today.

Here are three ways you can buy my fabulous mini book Innocence. And I'll make it even easier for you and tell you which option is best. Buy it thru Etsy! Why? Because whether you have an iPhone, Android or some other type of smartphone, you can download this digital PDF version for only $1.99! When I put Innocence for sale on Amazon and iBooks, I did not have as much control over the price. The minimum was $2.99 so that's where those downloads are at. But over at Etsy, you get the same great deal for a dollar less. Also, you can read the first four pages directly from the book's listing. Or better yet, I'll post an excerpt from the book at the bottom here.

So one more time, here's where you can get this awesome book:
Etsy for only $1.99
Amazon for $2.99
IBooks for $2.99

Also, if you leave a review for Innocence on Etsy, I will email you a 50% off coupon for Book 2 Awakened, coming soon.

Alright, here you go with the excerpt from Innocence:

Fyi: Sixteen-year-old Mint and her mom Trixie have just moved to a new country town called Darkwood. This is an excerpt from the beginning of Chapter 2 where Mint learns just what level of crazy inhabits this place.

Confession: the excerpt is cut off by a spot of my choosing and not necessarily at the end of the sentence that's being spoken. :)

What the heck kind of name was Darkwood?  It sounded like those evil underworlds in the PC games some of her old friends in high school played.

“These people have got to be crazy around here,” Mint mumbled to herself.

She slowed as she reached the city limits, keeping her speed under 35 as the signs indicated.  She passed a police car facing the road sitting in the parking lot of a small ice cream shop.  “These people are nuts.  Their ice cream store is open in the winter.  Loonies.”

Mint kept turning her head back and forth to take in all the run-down little buildings along the road.  Most of them looked uninhabited, but the two or three cars outside of each told her that people actually frequented these places.

“Uhk,” she said, promising herself that she was going to convince Trixie to get them the heck out of here asap.

Mint finally found the grocery store, a pitiful little thing called Pinewood Grocery.  The only chain store she had seen on her way was a Dollar General.  Mint made a note to herself to do all her future shopping at the Dollar General if she could help it.  This place, this Pinewood Grocery, looked like it wasn’t fit to sell used shoes, let alone food that people were actually supposed to eat without getting sick.

When she got inside, she grabbed one of only three rickety shopping carts and pushed it ahead of her, ducking her head in embarrassment at the rattle-clang-bang it made as it protested being used.  She picked up some fresh veggies, pasta and meat, then stopped by the freezer section to get some hot pockets and the other junk food that her mom liked.  Mint didn’t know why she herself didn’t like junk food more.  It probably had something to do with the need to feel that at least one of them was a grown up.  Trixie used to cook back in the day.  But a couple years ago she had just stopped for the most part and given up on it, like she had given up on being an adult in most other areas of her life as well. Fortunately, Mint had learned enough skills from her mom and the Food Network to get by pretty well.

Mint checked out quickly, only too glad to get out of the dingy shop.  Everyone there had begun to stare at her.  Mint forgot that’s what people in a small town might do, curious about any new face in town.  She felt more like they were all making plans on how to jump her as she walked to her car.  As soon as she stepped outside the door of the store, a chill shot down her spine.  There in the parking lot was the same mud bespeckled truck that she had almost run into when she pulled onto the road in front of her house.  How odd.  The truck had been heading in the opposite direction, and yet here it was in the parking lot.

With her eyes on the suspicious truck, Mint was almost to her car before she noticed there was someone leaning up against her jeep and peering into the windows.  But it wasn’t just anyone, it looked like the exact figure she had seen standing at the edge of the woods watching her house.  He had black hair and a black leather jacket.  He wore a dark gray t-shirt and ripped jeans.  His skin was ghostly pale, as if he never went out in the sun.  Mint’s mind was flying.  What should she do?  Maybe she could get back inside the store and just wait there until he left.  She tried to turn without being seen, whatever that was supposed to mean since she was standing in the middle of the parking lot.  But just then he looked up.  He had seen her.

Mint stood frozen.  Barely an hour in Darkwood and she would already be a fatality.

“Hi, I’m Ben,” he said.  His voice was surprisingly smooth and deep...and...pleasant.  Her fear eased under his soothing tone, but when she saw his eyes, they were the funniest color of blue she had ever seen.  A cold, misty color--like the pale blue glow in the midst of a block of ice.

“Hi,” she stammered, hoping he couldn’t sense her extreme discomfort, bordering on fear, after looking at his eyes.

“I’m Ben,” he repeated, smiling warmly, although the warmth could not take the cold out of his eyes.
Mint couldn’t understand why he was saying his name again and just standing there as if he was waiting for something.

“Are you going to tell me your name?” he said, still smiling.  “I was going to offer to carry your groceries, but it seemed rude not to at least introduce myself first.  You’re obviously new here,” he said.

Mint wasn’t sure if she was comfortable giving her name to this guy, especially after she was pretty sure she had seen him creeping around her house.  But then she looked into his eyes again and saw something she never expected to see in the eyes of another: a strange understanding.  It was as if he could see the lifetime of misery she had spent with her mother, moving from town to town, always being the “new girl”, dealing with her mom’s loser boyfriends and immature behavior...and even her fear of moving to this new place, this new backwoods town where she felt anything but safe.

“I’m Mint,” she said, feeling slightly out of breath by her realization.  She didn’t open up to strangers--ever.  And even the thoughts running unspoken through her head in his presence had seemed too intimate.

“Mint,” smiled Ben.  “Like the ice cream,” he said, not really phrasing it like a question.  “Mint chocolate chip, one of my favorites.”

Mint couldn’t be quite sure but she thought he winked then as he took the full paper sacks of groceries from her arms.  She followed him to the car.

She didn’t know if it was the sudden gust of cold November air or the greater distance between them while they were walking, but Mint’s head seemed to clear and she remembered that he looked identical to the figure she had seen at the edge of the woods.  Fear gripped her again.  What if he grabbed her and jumped into the jeep with her when she unlocked the car to put in the groceries?  She could already see him forcing her to drive to a dark, secluded spot in the woods where he would murder her and probably do a whole lot of other things that she didn’t want to think about.  At the very least he might try to grab her keys and steal the car.  There was no way she was walking all the way back to the trailer in the growing cold and falling darkness.

“Thank you, Ben.  I’ll take them from here,” Mint said brightly, as if she had not been thinking murderous thoughts.  She was already trying to remove the bags from his arms, but he protested.

“It’s no problem.  I’ll hold them while you unlock the car.”

This was exactly what Mint was afraid of.

“No, really, it’s ok.  I don’t want you to think I’m a baby or something and can’t handle a few groceries," Mint said, blurting out whatever came to her mind next.  “There’s probably so many more people you need to be off helping with their groceries, so you should probably go.”  Even to her own ears she sounded rather rude.  But rather be rude than dead.

Ben looked a bit confused but he ended up handing her the bags which she held until she had watched him walk inside the store.  Quickly, she set the bags beside the back door to the jeep and fished in her pocket for her keys.  She had to load the bags and get out of there before anything else happened.  She had just gotten the second bag settled on the back seat when she heard footsteps running up behind her.  She whirled around, shutting the jeep door by stepping back against it.  But it was only the blond haired girl who had rung her up.  Mint noticed her name tag read Megan.

“You forgot this,” the girl panted.  She held out a plastic bag with apples.  In her haste, Mint had run out the door, forgetting one of her bags of groceries.

“Thanks,” said Mint.  She took the bag and turned to go.

“I can’t believe he was talking to you,” said the girl.

“What?”  Mint turned to face the girl again.  “What do you mean?”

“Ben.  He was talking to you.”

“Well, he seemed old enough to know how to speak.”  Mint didn’t know if the girl caught her sarcasm or not.

“He never talks to anybody, well, at least none of the girls.  He mainly just talks to his friends.  But I would watch out if I were you.”

Mint’s curiosity was getting the best of her.  “Why?” she said.

“At the beginning of the school year a girl was found dead in the woods outside the school.  The police said she had been hit by a vehicle.  That same day one of the kids found blood on the fender of Ben’s Wrangler."

Well, this post turned out to be not so short but hopefully still sweet in the definition of cool/sweet. Lol. Ok, whatever.

Two and a Half Weeks of Meditation = a Clear Mind

Well, I figured it was about time to put up another post.  For the past two and a half weeks I have felt a strong urge just to meditate.  So I set my writing aside in faith and followed through on this urge.  The result is a much clearer way of thinking.  There were some old ways of living holding me back, and I discovered these ways of living were fueled by the way I was thinking.  Mainly was my mentality of lack.  I always felt in need.  My body constantly struggled to relax.  My subconscious was of living was to be tense all the time.

So, what does this mean for me and writing?  That I have the strength to push through these beginning days of publishing my first book, working on my second and publishing it even though I am several weeks past my deadline, and learning how to promote myself and "market my wares."  Lol.  I never thought I was shy about telling others about what a good job I've done, but I felt differently when it actually came time to let people know what a fabulous book I'd written and how it would improve their quality of life if they bought it.

So far, I have had three wonderful people helping me in this endeavor.  First is Karen Steer, book blogger from Australia (I have to keep mentioning that because I just think it's so cool).  You can find out more about her and about her review of my first book Innocence at www.karensbookhaven.com.

Secondly, is author of cozy mysteries, Leslie Keller.  I had the privilege to review her book while she reviewed mine.  You can find hers here for Kindle, and I assure you, if you love writing where you can pick up on that author's unique style and voice, you will like her book, Menu for Murder.  You can also read a snippet from her book here, and follow her blog www.lesliekellerbooks.blogspot.com.  I am including a copy of my review of Menu for Murder for your enjoyment.  And excuse my one and only typo.  Nex?  What is that?

Review for Menu for Murder:
I really enjoyed L.A. Keller's writing style. It's smart and quirky and has a voice all its own. The main character, Jayne Stanford, is clumsy and funny and endearing in her effort to fight off her self induced sprees of paranoia. I really related to the story because I moved to a new town to start my life over, just like Jayne. I found myself wondering how she was going to make it, if she would get her life stabilized. The opening chapter of Jayne being flirtatiously pursued by the elderly, drunken mayor had me fighting her corner right away. You'll find yourself turning the pages as she goes from one bad situation to the nex. Excellent cozy mystery story. Awesome job, Keller!

And lastly, a book blogger who goes by lillyrose71, has so graciously reviewed my book and posted it on her blog here.  I was blown away by her review.  I love her art of noticing the details.  There is no greater compliment to me than someone noticing the details.  From what I can tell, this lovely lady is located in the UK, based on part of her web address.  I have to mention the locations of these out of States people because I just think it's so cool that we can connect with people all over the world so easily.  And I always had a fascination with people from countries other than mine.  I love US citizens too, though. :)

Check out and follow her blog on Bloglovin'.  She has a fun tag in my opinion "Books, rants and occasionally book rants."  The last part reminds me of me and my three sisters and two of our friends talking about books and the plots and what we liked and didn't like.  Without any logical reason, it was a lot of fun!  Check out her other reviews as well.  She is quite passionate about the books she reads, which I find very refreshing.  In one she even posted to message her if you read the book she was reviewing so she could discuss the ending with you.  I thought that was pretty cool and a sign of an authentically interested reader.

Thank you, everyone for your reviews.  I am happy to work with all of you.

If you are a book blogger reading this, and you are interested in reviewing my book Innocence, you can tweet at me @EdinanRoman.  I would love to work with many more of you.

And of course, don't forget to buy your copy of Innocence at:

Boredom, ugh! Sooo two seconds ago

Well, as happy as I am about my book being published online and now available on Amazon and iBooks, I feel like my blog is kind of boring.  It's kind of embarrassing saying that, but when I think about writing a blog post as being a duty, then, to me, it's boring.  Why should anything in life be boring?  If something is boring, I have a really, really, really...yeah, really hard time doing it.  I tend to feel like if it can't be made interesting somehow, by turning it into a game, a competition, or changing your perspective, then it's not worth doing.  And right now my blog doesn't feel worth doing.  I'd rather be writing a story, something really fun and creative, or watching a good movie or even reading than be doing this right now.

Maybe I'm supposed to say how much I love every aspect of writing and publishing, but instead, I'm telling you what I don't like.  I like interesting things, and when I meet something boring, I feel like the life is being sucked out of me (I said something not someone, although it applies for both, but that's kind of mean).  It is hard to find a reason to go on.  I also feel kind of insulted when I come into contact with something boring and feel forced to stay in its presence.

I got some great responses the other day when I messaged FB friends about my book and asked if they would buy a copy.  But then after only one sale came through from that, I felt the excitement leaving and boredom creeping in.  I try to be excited about my story, but it's kind of hard when you don't know if people like it, if they want to hear more, if they say they want to hear more but are just being nice.

I thought it was so cool that my book was on Amazon, so I went online and searched my name.  Sure enough, my book comes up, but it is at the top of a list of the most boring looking books.  I feel kind of angry, like I shouldn't have to be subjected to this kind of insult.  (Lol.  This really does tick me off, but it is also quite hilariously petty.  Of course being near some boring books doesn't mean anything.  I guess it reminds me of being different in high school and feeling like I could only hang out with lame people.  I suppose that scarred me worse than I thought.  Haha.)  I'm including a screenshot of my book with these lame books just for laughs.  Then some day when I'm famous, I can look back over my blog and laugh.

Well, I guess that's some thoughts from the real me today.  Now, back to being the "put together, happy" writer.  Lol.

And of course I must add the links for my book because I'm supposed to be promoting and marketing, oh yes.  (Ugh)

Etsy
Amazon (Kindle)
iBooks

By the way, iBooks was a heck of a link to find on the internet, so you can thank me later for that one.  IPhones and Apple stuff is great, but without fail, it ends up ticking me off.  I know it's oversimplified to be easy to use and stuff, but I always feel so lost with their dumb icons and no words and exclusivity.  It makes me feel like I must be really dumb because they put extreme perfection into a very-easy-to-use format, and it's still hard for me to figure out without getting mad.

Anyways, that's my two cents on that, and now I'm done ranting and blogging and being irritated.  Back to my magical life of escapism.  Haha.  Help!  (If you're completely confused by now, that makes two of us. :) )

My first book is published!!!

It’s finished!!  My first book, Innocence the first in the Gold Dragon Series, is out and I am beyond excited.  If you don’t want to hear any more and want to buy it this second, click here.  In a minute I’ll give you more details about where all you can buy it, but first let me say LOOK AT THAT COVER!  My boyfriend Jorge (pronounced George) did all the swirly artwork.  He is amazing!  You can leave him a comment via my writer’s facebook page.  He does awesome pencil drawings as well.  Here’s one he did of a picture of me once.

But back to my book.  I am so happy with the final outcome.  I love the cover.  I love the story.  Several friends who helped me with reading the manuscript were my sister Sharon Yoder, my friend Alicia Walter, and my mentor Deborah Thompson.  Thank you so much for your help!

Others whom I could not have done without are my good looking boyfriend Jorge Rivera, my parents Enos and Bertha Yoder, and the rest of my family and everyone who let me talk their ear off about how much I wanted to write a book.

I’m excited about the style and length of the book.  I am writing this series in mini-books.  Each book will have less than ten chapters and can be read in one sitting.  I like the quickness of them, the suspense, the anticipation of each sequel.  I hope you like it too.  I thought of all of you wonderful readers as I wrote it.

So...here’s what you all have been waiting for:
To purchase it in a beautiful and easy-to-read PDF format, click here.

The link will take you to Etsy.com where you set up a simple account then finish making your purchase. There are further instructions on the website about viewing the book on your device (works best on a smart phone on the free Kindle app).

I would love to hear what you think.  Leave me a comment below or send me an email authorrebeccayoder@gmail.com.  Also, if you return to the Etsy site, here, and leave a review, I’ll send you a discount coupon for Awakened, the next book in the series, on its release date. (Note: Etsy may not allow you to leave a review until a few days after purchase.)

Two great things

Two great things happened today. First, we had an ice storm here in Clinton, NC. The world is transformed into a glittering mass of ice-covered EVERYTHING! I love this kind of weather. No branches fell on our roof, although one did fall only 15 feet from it. My boyfriend's dad slid on the road while driving to work, but he did not have an accident. Our power is still on. So we have a lot to be thankful for. A neighbor did have a tree fall on their roof and now the roof is covered with a tarp. I keep seeing electric servicing trucks but none of them need to head our way. So there have been people affected by this storm but we are safe.

The second great thing that happened this week is that I finished my first book!!! I've sent it to my "editors" which are mostly friends at this point. When I hear back from them I just have a few last adjustments to make and then she'll be set to go online. I'll post as soon as it's available as well as more info about the book and what the cover looks like and all that.

Thank you to everyone who supported me this whole time. I'm excited to introduce my work to the world--finally!

Chapter 7

I'm excited to say I've passed a never - before- reached milestone: chapter 7! I've never come this far in a story in my adult life since I've been actively living out my writing career. It was amazing to see that number on my computer yesterday.

I can't wait to reveal my story. I can't tell you right now because I am sworn to silence by someone in the story. He threatened to leave the book if I blabbed too soon. And if he leaves the story, then my book will fall apart. So I'm trapped!  But I promise I'll tell you as soon as he let's me.

Be sure to stick around so you can be the first one to hear more details.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me over the past three years!

The Easy Route

Amanda Hocking said that when she was young, she thought writers were boring, so she saved writing as her "safety career" in case a different one didn't turn out for her. Although I can't say I ever thought writers were boring, I found her thoughts funny. I've always looked at writing as a very romantic career. The idea of struggling away over a novel, quarreling with an editor and having my own book signing has always been very enticing to me.

Nowadays I don't go for the "struggling" thing so much. I prefer things to be easy. I know life can be hard sometimes, but I don't think it was originally meant to be hard. So i look for the easiest path to get to where I want to go. I look for that Helping Hand, if you know what I mean. Were we not given dreams by a Higher Power in order to live them out? Would not that Higher Power show us the best route to get us there?

Today I'm enjoying another day on that route to my writing dreams. Although I don't call them dreams anymore. I call them my reality.

I'm excited to tell you again about the story I'm working on, Protecting Innocence. It's in the YA division and it's going to be AWESOME. I'm so excited about how fun it is to write the story. I believe whatever I invest my time in doing, it should be fun to me in some way. I'm very grateful to have found the fun in writing again after a ten year absence from fiction and a three year effort of getting back I'm to writing.

Thank you to all who support me. I'm grateful for all your encouragement and can't wait to reveal more about this book.  Thanks for your interest and for reading my blog. Have an awesome day!

It's a New Year

It's a new year!  And new years call for new things like changes to your life.  I am making the change from talking about what I want to do to DOing what I want to do.  So here is a list of some things I will be doing this year (don't know how they'll happen, but...).

1. Writing full time

2. Making my living off of writing alone

3. Loving every moment of it

I'm excited about the book I'm working on, Protecting Innocence.  I already have a carrier for it.  Her name is Deborah and she has a shop called Simply NC, where she carries all things made in North Carolina (where I live).  This story had flowed for me from chapter one and it's still going.  I plan on self-publishing it via ebook format and print.  Deborah challenged me to have the book finished and in her store by Easter.  I can't wait to see it in print.  I also can't wait to see it in ebook form.

If you check earlier posts in this blog, you will see a lot of ups and downs.  While perhaps downs cannot be avoided, I decided to add more ups to my life.  And one of those is going after my dream of making my living off of writing and writing full time.  I'm excited about doing this.  Some other amazing people in my same situation have already done it.  I can too.  Hearing their stories is so inspiring.

So, next thing I have to do is finish the manuscript.  I love working on this story.  It reawakens the feel of emotions that we tend to put aside as adults in the name of maturity.  Writing about the life of a teenager will do that to you.  I never thought I would write a YA book.  I never cared for them in the past.  They always seemed too light and unrealistic.  But for some reason, they are exactly what I need right now.  I have been reading Amanda Hocking's Watersong series and Kiera Cass's Selection series.  I also have borrowed from the library the famous Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer.  (I think she's the only Stephanie I've see with an e instead of an a.)  I'm also reading Amanda Hocking's blog, starting from the beginning before she was published.  Now that's an inspiring read!  Google her.  You'll be amazed at her story.  Self-published millionaire is the line that pulls you in (especially if you're a writer!).

Thank you to everyone who is reading this, and thank you to my friends and family for the years of support you've already given me.

Failure & Future

Well, it looks like I have failed at another NaNo event.  I know there are still two days left, and miracle word counts have happened.  But my plans include something other than winning a word count this month.  Through my failure I learned what I really want, or rather, what my first step is to getting where I want to go.

My goal is to make a living from my writing.  And I believe that when I complete my first adult book, finishing the next one will be easier.  I also believe that the right readers will be attracted to my work and news will spread.  However, I have tried time and again to finish this first novel that I'm talking about.  I have the story chosen and the plot mapped out, but the finish line seems ever in the future.

Last week a friend challenged me to finish any book I choose by Easter and she would carry it in her store.  As I pondered on finishing my novel for this challenge, I also knew that a goal so far away felt daunting to me.  I wanted something I could complete in a week.  I did some research on stories I had completed, half completed and of various genres.  Then it dawned on me what would work.  I had a children's ebook I had published almost two years ago.  I decided to make that one my first paper version.  I checked pricing at a local printing business and found out that printing my own work was going to be much simpler than I had thought.

So my task this weekend is to format my children's book Betty Butter into a version to send to the printers.  It's lacking a few illustrations.  The e-version has no illustrations but is also less expensive to purchase at only $1.99.  A fun recipe to make homemade butter at the end of the book makes up for the lack of illustrations in the digital version.  I feel that the printed version will not fair so well without the illustrations.

After the completion of this first paper printing project, I have a second story I will write about Betty Butter and print in e-format as well as paper printing.  These were small steps I could see myself completing without being overwhelmed.  And the anticipation of being able to say I have two books out before the New Year is a huge affirmation for me.  As I build my faith in myself, I know that novel will look easier and easier.

That's my plan.  I made a schedule this morning to show my purpose to myself and the universe as to how I'm managing my time in order to meet my goals.  I now feel confident that I will meet them and that God will be there to help me all along the way.  I know he will give me more than I ever dreamed and planned for.

Continuing the Enthusiasm

I have to report something cool, even though I don't really understand the stats of Facebook or even Blogger for that matter.  But I get the general drift that big numbers are good.

Yesterday I posted a link to the blog I wrote (yep yesterday's blog) where I included the cover photo, a summary and excerpt of the novel I'm doing for NaNo and that will be out this month.  Usually my FB posts reach an average of 20 people.  Well, that particular post reached 159.  Wow, did you see that?  One hundred fifty-nine.  That's huge for me.  So if you have a huge following or whatever, don't laugh at me.  I'm coming to where you are.  And you started out with only 159 at one time.  Lol.  Not trying to hate.  Just some good-natured ribbing.

Anyways, I'm excited.  I've had a really rough day and I feel that was my little bit of encouragement from the writing world.

In case you missed it from yesterday, I will include the cover photo and the link to yesterday's blog for you.  I am so excited about this book.  It has one of those characters that you think, "Shit, I really hope I don't mess her up."

I have added another 1,153 words to my NaNo count as of right now.  I plan to finish the third chapter today.

Link to yesterday's blog

You can also check out a sneak peek of the first chapter here.  It's a "raw" draft copy so there may be some inconsistencies here and there.  But let me know your feedback and comments.  You can find me on Facebook or Twitter to stay in touch for updates.

NaNoWriMo Time!

NaNoWriMo has started.  For those who have never heard of it, NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month.  In the month of November writers all over the world take up the challenge to write 50,000 words in 30 days.  This year I gave myself the challenge to write the first two books in the Stone House series, a series I thought of in March of this year.  Below is a picture idea for the cover along with a summary and an excerpt from Chapter 2 of the book.

Kate Galbraith and Stone House

Summary
Kate Galbraith's parents are both dead.  She alone is in charge of her two-year-old baby brother Jacob under the guardianship of their great uncle.  But how will she protect her brother when she finds out her great uncle is their most dangerous enemy?
After coming back from a walk on a dark, rainy day, Kate finds her great uncle and several other men in the house, talking in ominous tones about her and her little brother.  As she eavesdrops, she finds out they have already taken Jacob, and now they are coming after her.  Why?  What do they want with her?  Why did they take her brother?  But there is no time for questions as Kate races out of the house without even a coat against the coming winter cold.
As she begins her journey of escape toward the massive mountain of San Martine that stands behind Stone House like a shield, she doesn't know that she has been inside of her home for the last time in many years.  She's about to find out that the kidnapping of her baby brother is part of something much bigger than she is.
Excerpt from Chapter 2
Kate ran until she felt like she was going to fall over from exhaustion.  Her lungs burned and the lacerations on her cheeks and hands from the branches that whipped her stung.  The cold air sapped her of the little strength she had left.  Within moments the dogs’ barks grew closer.  Kate pushed herself onward, not knowing how her legs were still able to obey her.  The ground beneath her continued to slope upward with every step.  Each breath came harder and more painful.  She was running for what felt like hours, even though it had been barely an hour since she had left the house.  Her feet were beginning to sink into snow now, leaving an obvious trail for her pursuers.  She ran faster and faster, but the faster she ran the faster they seemed to gain on her.  She broke out onto a small clearing in the wood, the black trees standing out starkly against the white snow, the gray clouds blocking out any light from the sun.  The rain still fell making each step slick and treacherous.
As she ran out into the clearing, she rethought her path and figured it might be better to stay among the trees, but when she turned to go back, the dogs had broken into the clearing already.  She had nowhere to turn but straight forward.  Finally Kate’s tired legs gave out and tripped over a large rock.  She went down face first into the snow.  The dogs reached her in two bounds.  She held her breath, waiting for them to sink their teeth into her flesh.
